PETITION

Join Us in Pushing City Council to VOTE NO on the New Franchise Agreement!
 -Please sign!-

We, the undersigned, urge our San Diego City Council to vote NO against Mayor Faulconer’s rushed plan to auction off our city’s most valuable asset, the electric and gas franchise, to a fossil fuel company for a period of 20 years. This flawed franchise auction does not allow for full public input or for the rigorous deliberation by the Council that a multi-billion dollar deal demands.

While the franchise is worth at least $15 billion, this auction will begin bidding at less than 1% of that value – $80 million. Our city will lose billions that otherwise could go toward helping San Diego residents and businesses recover from the pandemic-induced financial crisis, and toward building renewable energy infrastructure to meet our city’s goal of using 100% renewable energy by 2035.

The auction agreement will lock San Diegans into decades more of paying California’s highest utility rates.  We, the ratepayers, will potentially continue to pay numerous corporate expenses as we have during SDG&E’s recently expired 50-year franchise agreement.

A NO vote allows the Council to consider better options for our city’s power, such as an independent public utility that would duplicate what other public utilities have done across the country: provide lower rates to millions of San Diegans, and a better partnership for dealing with community needs and the climate crisis.

So please vote NO to this misguided auction. Please support extended deliberation and public input to determine the best option for San Diego’s utility service.

Thank you!
